&Beyond Benguerra Island

Previous Next

Benguerra lodge is set in the sunny Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique and lies in a protected marine conservation area offering pristine beaches and unspoiled coral reefs teeming with marine life.

Boasting a fresh island feel, the lodge’s welcoming guest areas offer views of the lush tropical garden and the ocean beyond.  Looking out onto a sandy beach and set on a deep lagoon unaffected by the tides, this exclusive beach getaway is an ideal place for you to unwind. Cleverly created patches of shade, comfortable loungers beckon set around the lodge’s rim flow swimming pool look out onto the waves.  Vast wooden verandas flow from outdoor dining areas ideal for starlit dinners to cool plunge pools that mimic the glimmer of the sea.

Set among a lush island forest, ten casinhas and two cabanas admit cooling sea breezes through wooden shutters and glazed windows and doors that fold back to frame the magnificent views. Spacious bathrooms feature generous bathtubs big enough for two, while outdoor showers decorated with hand-painted tiles offer an opportunity to enjoy your ablutions while listening to the nearby whisper of the waves.

The deep Mozambique Channel, which runs alongside the island, is renowned for its game fish and Benguerra Island offers some of the world’s best catch-and-release deep sea fishing and fly fishing opportunities. While the island is fringed with golden sandy beaches, its interior is a lush patchwork of forests, wetlands and fresh water lakes. Horse riding trips and island expeditions will allow you to  explore both the coastline and the interior of the island.

Guest Reviews

Having traveled extensively around the world - Wow--it is hard to imagine a more perfect time than three days under the Mozambican sun on Benguerra. From the helicopter rides book-ending our stay to sunset on the dhow boat and castaway picnic on the most picturesque of deserted beaches, this is a trip we will never forget. The casinha's are out of this world, and Thys and his staff provide a degree of luxury that is unmatched anywhere else we've travelled.

Craig A, Ann harbour, Michigan.

“ I must say that this place is incredible. It feels like something out of James Bond when you get in the helicopter to go there... And then as you arrive you gradually discover the design of the lodge, all of the details which go into the casitas, the design of the main boat... All of the staff put in a lot of passion to ensure you have a wonderful stay. The evening drinks around the fire is a nice way to end up the day. The island itself and the beaches are top notch. Would highly recommend.”
